Hello, welcome to Josephine’s Language World. It is the 14th episode of this program today. And during these days, thanks for your listening and support, then I have the strong desire and motivation to have a chat with you here. And today we will talk about in Taiwan and Japan, how do people show their support and blessings to the students who will attend the entrance examination of senior high school or university.
On 19, January this year, there was a train driver in Sizuokaken, taking the sands originally scattered on the railways to the students of the nearby junior high school. These students will attend the Senior High school Entrance Exam. And the sands just stand for the support from the train driver.
But why? What’s the relationship between the sands and the exam? It is because in Japan, when we describe a person who fails in the big exam, we will say he is going down or slipping down on the exam. And the sands can prevent the person from falling or slipping on the road, right? So the sands symbolize the lucky and fortunate stuff to help the students not to fail in the exam.
On the other hand, how about it in Taiwan? The students usually eat Zongzi before they attend the entrance exam. It is because of the blessing words of”bow zong”(包中)。 Bow means definitely, absolutely or without any problems, and Zong means to pass the exam. So Bow Zong means of course you will pass the exam, without any problems, right? And Zongzi also has the similar pronunciation with the blessing words. So eating Zongzi can bring the luck to help students succeed in the entrance exam.
These are the ways for Japanese and Taiwanese to show their supports to the students. Do you know in another countries, for example, like America or Canada, how do you give your support to the students who will attend the big exam? If you know it, please tell us and send your message by email. And of course you can find my email address on the podcast. Look forwards to receiving it soon. That’s all for today. Thanks.
